FOR RELEASE: DECEMBER 10, 2001
Overland Park, KS, December 10, 2001- Baker & Associates, Inc. is anouncing the acquisition of Pacific 17 by aluminum king Alcoa in a 35 million dollar deal. Aloca plans on extending their operations into the wireless space by acquiring a majority stake in San Diego-based Pacific 17, which designs, implements, operates and maintains wireless networks.
AFL Telecommunications, a unit of Alcoa's joint venture with Tokyo-based telecom wire and cable manufacturer Fujikura, will manage Pacific 17, who has 250 employees serving customers in more than a dozen states. Offices include one in Atlanta, Birmingham, Chicago, Orlando, and Puerto Rico.
Jerry Baker, CEO, said, "The transaction was a very good deal for all parties involved." The principal of Pacific 17will continue with the company and plan on helping Alcoa grow in the industry.
"AFL Telecommunications has been successful in building a customer focused service organization for Central Office, Broadband and Outside plant applications," said Frank Warence, president of AFL Telecommunications. "With the acquisition of Pacific 17, we expect to achieve a similar leadership position for providing high-preformance services to the Wireless market as well."
Pacific 17 was established in 1977 as a California closely-held corporation. In June 1990, the company elected to formally transition from infrastructure engineering to more lucrative telecommunications systems integration, including site acquisition, A&E, CM and installation services. Robert C. Roffest, III and Benjamin C. Yahp were quickly hired on in April 1994 as principals of the firm to meet the recent objectives.
Acquiring control of Pacific 17 gives Alcoa, through AFL Telecommunications, an entry into the wireless market. Pacific 17 has worked on PCS, cellular, broadband networks and other two-way telecom build-outs throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
